Faultlines
A guide to restoring the dialectic and saving our public spaces
The ability to debate ideas is basis for academic debate and a well-functioning society. Unfortunately, many conversations today feel increasingly hostile, precarious and risky. The spread of cancel culture, institutional oversight and targeted activism has narrowed the space for polite disagreement and friendly debate. This book examines the collapse of the public sphere as symptomatic of profound ideological divides that plague our society. More than differences of opinions, fundamental disagreements exist over the legitimacy of facts, acceptability of language and compatibility of values. Using a combination of dialectical learning and deductive inquiry, readers learn how to use rhetorical analysis to identify these ideological faultlines to create opportunities for constructive conversations around the most controversial of topics. It is hoped that this dialogical toolset helps restore our capacity to engage amicably with those whose opinions we detest.
